Yale Early Applications December 4, 2013 Yale received more Early applications this year as compared to last year. The Yale Early application  figures are in for this fall. And this year, Yale received 5.6% more Early applications as compared to last year. With a total of 4,768 applications received during the Early round this year, it marked an increase from last years 4,514 applications. According to the Yale Daily News,   In the three years prior to 2011 — the year that Harvard and Princeton reinstated their early application programs — Yale’s early applications topped 5,000, with an all-time peak of 5,556 early applications in 2008. The figure for this year isnt quite as high but it is certainly on the rise. The increase in Early applications to Yale this fall is in line with increases seen at many highly selective colleges. But there is a quote in the article on the Yale Early applications in the Yale Daily News that we wanted to draw your attention to: The five percent increase makes it tougher, but everyone who applied early realizes that the process has always been very tough at Yale, said Gregory Hosono, a high school senior at Philips Academy Andover, adding that applicants cannot control anything beyond how they present themselves to schools. Hosono said he applied early to Yale as a way of signifying that it was his top choice. This quote is a bit misleading. When Gregory Hosono says as a statement of fact that the five percent increase makes it tougher, hes not necessarily correct. Just because more students apply to a highly selective college doesnt mean that it will be tougher to get in. If C students are applying to Yale, that doesnt make it tougher for the A student to get in. And, as weve written many times on our college admissions blog, many highly selective colleges actively recruit students who dont have a shot of getting in just to boost their admission rates and, ultimately, their US News World Report ranking. However there are many disadvantages to DNA testing, such as a challenge of accuracy, the costs of DNA testing and the possible misuse of DNA. The prospect of a national DNA database in Australia has been heavily criticised with complaints of invasion of privacy and stigma against those with terminal diseases. Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA as it is most commonly known, is a strand of molecules found within the cell nucleus of all living things. Victims with AIDS feel that they might be stigmatised if their DNA is stored in a national database and it could be used against them. The prospect of a genetic database in Australia has been raised recently. The federal police are pushing for a national database to help solve crime and are asking for legislation to be allowed to collect DNA samples from people accused, or suspected of committing an offence (the Australian, 06.12.1997 see appendix one) The proposal has sparked a moral dilemma. Victoria has had a DNA database since 1992 with the reasoning that, if a suspect is cleared, their DNA must be erased off the list. However, recently Victorian government has allowed police to collect samples from more suspected criminals, not just those accused of murder, serious assault or rape. Now they are allowed to collect from those accused of drug trafficking, arson causing death and aggravated burglary. Privacy is also another big issue surrounding the plans for a database. In a wider social context there are many cases of women who were prisoners during war who got through by grasping onto something which gave them hope, one of these women is known†¦show more content†¦In the dictionary hope is defined as ‘A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.’ In my own words hope is something everybody needs in order to pull through tough times, it’s something that is needed to survive. I believe that everybody has hope but not everyone can find it and sometimes it can be too late. To say we are never without hope would be true in the sense that everybody does have hope, whether that be unrevealed or exposed. Therefore it doesn’t always necessarily shine during the most difficult conflicts, leaving the prompt restricted. I know within myself that there were times where I almost gave up. My dad was rushed into surgery a year or so ago with a brain tumour, at first the haste of the situation didn’t give me any time to think. There was a high chance of losing him on the operating table and I felt as though I had lost all hope within myself. I knew that I had to find hope so I gave myself time to think, realising that my dad is the strongest person I know and he has never lost a fight in his life, so why would it happen now? I had found my hope in a time of conflict and it helped me get through. The question I continue to ask myself is ‘where would I be at this point in time if I didn’t discover that hope?’ I know of a girl who wasn’t as lucky as I was when it came to finding her inner hope. She lived alone with her single mother and her mother become very ill with cancer.
